SUROC @ UNC

  1.  Daily Attendance

This is a full-time research experience.  Participants are expected to spend a full working day, Monday through Friday, from program start date to the end date, either working directly under the supervision of their faculty preceptors or taking part in workshops.  Students and preceptors are to communicate beforehand regarding their expectations.  Due to the nature of the research project, it may occasionally be necessary to carry out research in the evening or during the weekend.  It should be further recognized that all projects do not have identical time requirements; this is the nature of research.  It is not permissible for a participant to hold any other job, or enroll in a formal course during the program, or participate in another program concurrent with this program.

  1.  Absence from Chapel Hill

Participants who, for emergency reasons, must be away form Chapel Hill for a period during the workday week, must notify their lab contact/student mentor and the SUROC Office prior to the absence.

  1.  Workshops

A series of informational workshops/field trips will take place throughout the 10 weeks, please refer to your calendar for dates and times.  Attendance and participation is mandatory.  You will be expected to arrive on time, participate in discussions, and show respect to invited speakers by actively listening.

  1.  Organized Social Events

There will be a number of social events planned during the program.  Attendance at these functions is voluntary, but participants should notify the host, in advance, if they are unable to attend.

  1.  Poster Session

Each participant is expected to participate in The Graduate School Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium at the end of the program with a poster or oral presentation.  Again, participants and student mentors are urged to work closely with the preparation of the poster or oral presentation.  Participants will receive assistance and further instruction upon their arrival to Chapel Hill.

  1.  Honor Code and Campus Code

By accepting enrollment, SUROC students must commit themselves to upholding the principles of the UNC-Chapel Hill Honor Code and those rules set for the campus.  The Honor Code prohibits lying, cheating, or stealing when those actions involve academic processes or University, student, or academic personnel acting in an official capacity.  The Campus Code requires students to conduct themselves so as not to impair significantly the welfare or the educational opportunities of others in the University community.  SUROC students are expected to abide by the Honor Code and the Campus Code while participating in the program.  Failure to do so may result in termination from the program.

  1.  Dress Code/Safety

Various required attendance events will occur throughout the summer.  Many require appropriate business attire.  Also, appropriate attire is required for safety when working in labs.
